Three-Day Itinerary in São Miguel, Azores
Day 1: Exploring the North Coast
Start the day by driving along the north coast of São Miguel, where every turn in the road reveals a breathtaking new landscape.
Capelas: A charming village, perfect for a first stop. Be sure to walk to the cliffs for a spectacular view of the rough sea.
Ribeira Grande: The second largest city on the island is a must-visit. Take a stroll through the historic center and enjoy a coffee at Casa do Parque, a cozy spot that serves a great espresso.
Praia do Areal de Santa Bárbara: If you enjoy surfing or just want to relax on the sand, this beach is ideal. The waves are strong, and the scenery is simply stunning.
Miradouro do Porto Formoso: From here, you’ll have a panoramic view of the ocean with the Gorreana tea plantations in the background—a place that invites a moment of contemplation.
Calhetas de Maia Natural Pools: End the day at these natural pools, where you can swim in crystal-clear waters surrounded by volcanic rocks. A unique experience that only the Azores can offer.
Where to Eat: To close the day on a high note, have dinner at "A Tasca" in Ponta Delgada. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the octopus "à lagareiro" is a must-try. The wait can be a bit long, but it’s worth it!

Day 2: Hidden Waterfalls
Today is the day to explore the waterfalls that make São Miguel so special.
Salto do Cabrito: One of the island's most well-known waterfalls, yet it retains its charm. The access is straightforward, though there’s a steep incline on the way back. However, the walk through the dense vegetation is rewarded with a magnificent view of the waterfall.
Cascata do Segredo: As the name suggests, this is a hidden gem still little explored by tourists. Park your car in the small village of Vila Franca do Campo, and walk a short 10-minute trail. Upon arrival, you’ll find a wonderful pool where you can swim and dive to your heart's content, and further along, the enchanting waterfall.
Where to Eat: Have lunch at Restaurante Fim de Século in Ribeira Grande. Don’t forget to bring cash, as the restaurant doesn’t accept cards. The food is incredible and plentiful—perfect after a day of hiking.
Day 3: Sete Cidades and Thermal Waters
The last day is reserved for some of São Miguel’s most iconic and relaxing landscapes.
Miradouro Grota do Inferno: One of the most photographed spots on the island, offering views of the Blue and Green Lagoons of Sete Cidades. Go early to avoid the crowds and capture the beauty of the place in the soft morning light.
Sete Cidades: Stroll through the village and around the lagoons. The tranquility of the area is contagious, and it's worth getting lost in the trails around it.
Dona Beija Thermal Baths: Located in Furnas, it’s the perfect place to relax after a day of adventures. The thermal pools are warm, and the setting, with the surrounding trees, is simply magical.
Ferraria: End the day at Ponta da Ferraria, where you can bathe in the sea warmed by thermal waters. It’s a surreal experience where the force of nature meets the comfort of a warm bath.
Where to Eat: For a memorable dinner, head to Terra Nostra Garden Hotel and enjoy the local cozido das Furnas, which is slowly cooked in volcanic holes. A gastronomic experience you can only find here.
Best Time to Visit?
The best time to visit São Miguel in the Azores is during the spring (April to June) and early fall (September to October). During these periods, you’ll experience mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and beautiful landscapes.
Spring (April to June): This is a great time to see the island in full bloom, with vibrant flowers and lush greenery. The weather is pleasant, and it's ideal for outdoor activities.
Early Fall (September to October): The weather is still warm, but the summer crowds have diminished. It’s a good time to enjoy the island’s natural beauty and outdoor adventures without the high season rush.
Summer (July and August) can be warmer and more crowded, while winter (November to March) might bring cooler temperatures and more rain, but it’s also a quieter time to explore the island if you don’t mind the weather.
